Royal County Down in Newcastle, Northern Ireland is one of the world’s classic links courses, set between the Mountains of Mourne and the sea at Dundrum Bay in the Murlough Nature Reserve. Its fairways are narrow and wind through massive sand dunes, heather and golden gorse lining the rough, with “bearded” bunkers (with overhanging grasses) and fast, domed greens that punish anything less than precise golf. The par 4 9th is iconic a long tee shot from atop a mound down into valley below, followed by a demanding approach over bunkers. It challenges all levels of players, especially from the back tees where it stretches beyond 7,100 yards, and offers spectacular views and a timeless, rugged beauty.
